Das Herz von St. Pauli, the Heart of St.Pauli, had been played before kick-off at the Millerntor Stadium in Hamburg for two decades. It was enormously popular — on matchdays and beyond. Fans had played the song at their wedding, others had requested it be played at their funerals. It had become part of the culture.

But the club had discovered that the anthem has a link back to the Nazi Party.

This is the story of one of the most complicated periods in St.Pauli’s history.
