The Miami Heat continue to prove that the NBA Draft isn’t over once the 60 picks are made.
In today’s episode of Miami Heat Talk, we’re breaking down two more undrafted free agent signings that could become intriguing developmental projects for one of the NBA’s best player development organizations.
The Heat have added veteran point guard Meechie Johnson Jr., a proven college scorer who averaged 17 points per game while bringing leadership, experience, and shot creation to the backcourt. Miami has consistently looked for competitive guards who can defend, score, and fit into Erik Spoelstra’s system, and Johnson gives them another opportunity to evaluate a player with offensive upside.
Miami also signed 7-foot-1, 260-pound center Arnas Sakenis, a true rim protector who averaged 2.3 blocks per game. Size like his doesn’t come around often, and with the Heat always looking to improve their frontcourt depth, Sakenis brings exactly what Miami values: length, physicality, rebounding, and shot blocking.
Now let’s be realistic. These players are undrafted for a reason, and expectations should remain modest. Most undrafted players never become NBA contributors.
But if there’s one franchise that has earned the benefit of the doubt when it comes to developing overlooked talent, it’s the Miami Heat.
We’ve watched this organization transform undrafted and overlooked players into legitimate NBA contributors. Duncan Robinson became one of the league’s premier three-point shooters. Gabe Vincent became an NBA Finals starting point guard. Max Strus developed into a valuable rotation player. Caleb Martin turned himself into one of the biggest playoff performers in franchise history. Udonis Haslem became the heart and soul of Heat Culture. Kendrick Nunn finished as an All-Rookie selection, while Keith Askins carved out a long NBA career after going undrafted.
Every year fans doubt Miami’s developmental system, and every year the Heat seem to discover another player nobody expected.
Will Meechie Johnson Jr. or Arnas Sakenis become the next success story?
Nobody knows.
But these are exactly the kinds of low-risk signings that have helped build Miami’s reputation around the league. Summer League will give both players an opportunity to prove they deserve more than just a training camp invitation, and Heat fans should absolutely keep an eye on them.
Could the Heat have found two more diamonds in the rough?
