Yuji Nishida vs Matthew Anderson | Crazy Volleyball Battle !!! USA vs Japan in the Men's Volleyball Nations League 2026 delivered one of the most dramatic and exciting matches of the entire tournament! In a spectacular VNL semifinal in Ningbo, China, the United States defeated Japan 3–2 after an incredible five-set battle, winning 25–19, 23–25, 20–25, 25–19, 15–13.
This was much more than just another volleyball match. Japan entered the semifinal as the only undefeated team in VNL 2026, while the USA were fighting for a place in the VNL final. The match quickly turned into an unforgettable battle between two legendary opposite hitters: Japan's Yuji Nishida and USA's Matthew Anderson.
The United States started strongly and won the opening set 25–19, but Japan immediately responded. Yuki Ishikawa helped Japan level the match by taking the second set 25–23.
Then came the incredible third set.
Yuji Nishida completely exploded offensively, scoring 10 points in the set alone. His powerful attacks repeatedly caused problems for the American defense, while his serving and blocking also made a huge impact. Japan won the third set 25–20 and suddenly found themselves leading the semifinal 2–1.
But Matthew Anderson and the USA refused to give up.
The Americans came back strongly in the fourth set, winning 25–19 and forcing a deciding fifth set.
And that fifth set became pure volleyball drama.
Japan and USA battled point for point, with neither team willing to surrender. Japan eventually took a 12–11 lead, but the Americans responded with three consecutive points. A Yuji Nishida service error gave the USA a crucial advantage, Ethan Champlin followed with an ace, and Cooper Robinson put the Americans at match point.
Then came the final moment.
With USA leading 14–13, Matthew Anderson delivered a huge attack to finish the match and send the United States into the VNL 2026 final.
Anderson finished the match with 24 points, including 21 kills, 2 blocks and 1 ace. He attacked at an impressive 53% success rate and also contributed 13 successful receptions, showing that his impact went far beyond scoring.
Yuji Nishida finished with 19 points for Japan, including 14 kills, 3 blocks and 2 aces. His performance was especially impressive during the third set, where he scored 10 points and helped Japan take control of the match.
The statistical battle between the two stars was incredible.
Matthew Anderson finished with 24 points, while Yuji Nishida scored 19. Anderson produced 21 kills, 2 blocks and 1 ace, while Nishida recorded 14 kills, 3 blocks and 2 aces.
The USA also had the statistical advantage as a team, finishing with 67 attacks compared with Japan's 57, 9 blocks compared with 7, and 7 aces compared with Japan's 2. Japan, however, committed fewer errors, with 25 compared with 35 for the United States.
What makes this rivalry even more interesting is that USA and Japan had already played another incredible five-set match earlier in Men's VNL 2026.
On June 27 in Orléans, France, Japan defeated the USA 3–2, winning 18–25, 25–21, 20–25, 25–22, 15–13. Ran Takahashi led Japan with 26 points, while Matthew Anderson scored 16 points for the United States.
So when the two teams met again in the VNL semifinal, it was a rematch between two teams that already knew exactly how close their previous battle had been.
The story of this match was ultimately about two world-class opposite hitters.
Yuji Nishida showed his incredible explosiveness, power and ability to take over a set when Japan needed him most.
Matthew Anderson answered with experience, consistency and clutch scoring — and when the match reached its final point, Anderson was the one who delivered the decisive attack.
