The Trae Young era in Atlanta is officially over. The Hawks moved their franchise player to Washington for CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert, without even getting a first-round pick back. For a four-time All-Star, assist champion, and the engine behind a conference finals run, that kind of return raises one unavoidable question: what did the Hawks see that made them decide it was time to move on?
In this episode of BBALLBREAKDOWN, Coach Nick breaks down the full story. First, the brilliance. Trae’s floater game is still one of the most lethal weapons in basketball, built on elite footwork, deceptive gathers, and the ability to score or pass from the exact same motion. His vision might be his greatest gift, whether it’s threading lobs, finding weak-side cutters, or throwing lasers out of double teams that most guards never even see.
Then comes the harder part. Over time, Atlanta’s offense stopped getting better. After peaking near the top of the league, the efficiency slid while the team remained stuck in the middle of the standings. On film and in the numbers, patterns started to emerge: high-risk turnovers, three-point shot selection that dragged down efficiency, almost no off-ball gravity, and defensive breakdowns that opponents repeatedly hunted in pick-and-roll.
This isn’t a hit piece. The Hawks never built an ideal roster around him, and Trae carried more than his share of the load for seven seasons. But at some point, the front office decided the ceiling of that formula wasn’t high enough.
So what’s real, what’s misunderstood, and what finally pushed Atlanta to pull the trigger? This is the truth about Trae Young.
