Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tim Cone was caught on a hot mic speaking directly to Filipino big man Kai Sotto after the Philippines defeated Iran in the FIBA World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers. Cone told Sotto that he still believes he belongs in the NBA and then dropped the line that has the basketball world talking:

“I’ll talk to Miami. See what I can do.”

THAT IS A VERY INTERESTING CONNECTION! 👀🔥

Tim Cone has legitimate history with the Miami Heat organization, having worked with the Heat during the 2022 NBA Summer League, and he also has a longstanding relationship with Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra.

And now Cone is publicly telling Kai Sotto that he is willing to reach out to Miami on his behalf.

So… COULD KAI SOTTO ACTUALLY BECOME A MIAMI HEAT PROJECT?!

Sotto is only 24 years old and has the size that immediately gets your attention. The Filipino center has been playing extremely well for Gilas Pilipinas, averaging 15.5 POINTS, 15 REBOUNDS, 3 ASSISTS and 1 BLOCK during the Philippines’ latest two-game qualifying window.

He put up 18 points and 14 rebounds against Jordan before following that up with 13 points and 16 rebounds against Iran.

At 7’1”–7’3”, depending on the listed measurement, Sotto is a massive frontcourt prospect with the potential to give Miami something different.

Now, let’s be realistic: THIS DOES NOT MEAN KAI SOTTO IS SIGNING WITH THE MIAMI HEAT.

There is currently no confirmed Heat contract, no confirmed roster spot and no official announcement that Miami is pursuing him.

But that doesn’t mean this story isn’t worth watching.

In fact, I think the most realistic path could be something like an NBA training-camp opportunity, an Exhibit 10-type deal or another developmental opportunity that would allow Sotto to compete for a future NBA roster or two-way opportunity.

And THAT is where things get REALLY interesting for Miami.

The Heat are always looking for ways to develop talent, find overlooked players and turn potential into production.

Could Kai Sotto become another one of those Miami Heat development projects?

Could Erik Spoelstra and the Heat coaching staff unlock something in a 24-year-old, 7-foot-plus center?

Could he eventually become a legitimate NBA rotation player?

Or is Tim Cone simply trying to help one of his players get another opportunity to chase his NBA dream?
