On August 11, 2026, the Cincinnati Reds staged a dramatic comeback to defeat the Chicago White Sox 5-4 in 10 innings at Rate Field. The interleague matchup opened a three-game series and snapped a three-game losing streak for the Reds, who improved to 57-61. The White Sox, first in the AL Central at the time, fell to 61-57 after winning their previous two contests.
White Sox starter Sean Burke delivered a strong outing, working seven innings and allowing just one run on three hits while striking out eight without issuing a walk. He kept the Reds in check for most of the night. Opposite him, Cincinnati’s Nick Lodolo made his return from the injured list after a finger blister sidelined him for about a month. Lodolo lasted only four innings, surrendering four runs on five hits with five strikeouts.
The White Sox jumped ahead early. Brenton Doyle led off the bottom of the first with a 415-foot home run on Lodolo’s first pitch, marking his fourth career leadoff homer and the sixth such blast for Chicago this season. Edgar Quero added a solo shot in the second, and Miguel Vargas homered leading off the fourth to make it 3-0. An RBI double by Sam Antonacci later in the fourth pushed the lead to 4-0.
Cincinnati finally got on the board in the fifth when Eugenio Suárez launched a solo home run, cutting the deficit to 4-1. The Reds’ offense remained quiet until the eighth. Against reliever Bryan Hudson, Matt McLain and Michael Toglia singled. Elly De La Cruz then delivered an RBI single to right, scoring McLain and making it 4-2. After Sal Stewart flied out, JJ Bleday walked to load the bases. Tyler Stephenson followed with a two-run single to right off Grant Taylor, plating Toglia and De La Cruz to knot the score at 4-4.
Neither team scored in the ninth. Brock Burke worked a perfect frame for the Reds to set up the extra inning and earn the win (5-4). In the top of the 10th, with the automatic runner McLain on second, Toglia flied out to advance him to third. De La Cruz then hit a sacrifice fly to center against Sean Newcomb (1-3), allowing McLain to score the go-ahead run for a 5-4 lead. Emilio Pagán closed it out with a clean 10th, stranding the White Sox automatic runner for his 14th save.
De La Cruz finished with two RBI, while Suárez had two hits including the homer. The Reds collected seven hits total to the White Sox’s six. The game drew 38,113 fans for a promotional Pope hat giveaway night honoring Pope Leo XIV, a lifelong White Sox supporter. Sister Mary Jo Sobieck threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
The victory provided a much-needed boost for the Reds, who sat fifth in the NL Central entering the contest. It highlighted their resilience after struggling against Burke early and capitalized on late opportunities against the White Sox bullpen. For Chicago, the loss spoiled a strong start from Burke and a solid home performance in front of a sellout crowd. The series continued the following night as both clubs looked to build momentum in the second half of the 2026 season.
