Why Daniel Gafford Looks Like a Different Player for the Dallas Mavericks & More

Daniel Gafford is off to the best start of his Dallas Mavericks career, nearly doubling his career averages in blocks and assists while the Mavs climb from the bottom five to the middle of the NBA in offensive rebounding. Is it something or nothing that the Mavs are 29th in free throw attempts, that Cooper Flagg leads the league’s best floater team, and that Kyrie Irving and Cooper Flagg are +32 with Zaccharie Risacher but −6 with Max Christie?

Nick Angstadt and Isaac Harris play “Something or Nothing” with the early-season stats behind Daniel Gafford’s breakout and how Dusty May’s scheme lets him roam as a help-side shot blocker while PJ Washington guards opposing bigs. They also get into the Mavs’ lack of drives and free throws, Zaccharie Risacher closing games over Max Christie, and why the starting lineup with Risacher has played only 7 minutes. Plus, Naji Marshall, Caleb Martin, and the Mavs’ No. 1 ranked transition defense.
