GMM presented by @SwimOutletTV
In this GMM takeover of the SwimSwam Podcast with have Virginia Head Coach Todd DeSorbo and Virginia Associate Head Coach Tyler Fenwick.
Virginia is hosting what could be the most talent-dense swim meet of the fall outside of U.S. Short Course Worlds Trials and the World Championships.
The UVA Pro Elite SCM Worlds Prep Meet, set for October 15-16 in Charlottesville, will bring together a loaded field of Olympic champions, world champions and world record holders for three fast sessions of short course meters racing.
SwimSwam will livestream the meet, with Kevin Cargill on the call.
Expected names include Kate Douglass, Gretchen Walsh, Alex Walsh, Katie Ledecky, Caeleb Dressel, Bobby Finke, Leon Marchand, Regan Smith, Hubert Kos, Katharine Berkoff, Simone Manuel, Chris Guiliano and Jordan Crooks, among others.
The meet comes roughly two weeks before U.S. Short Course Worlds Trials, making it an unusually sharp midseason checkpoint for some of the best swimmers in the world.
DeSorbo and Fenwick unpack how this meet came together and accidentally became a talent juggernaut. They explain that was not USA Swimming drive. It was entirely coach-driven. And they share what they want to see and learn before U.S. SC World Champ Trials.
DeSorbo breaks down what he wants to see from Douglass and Walsh, whether Virginia’s college swimmers could jump into the meet before their Saturday dual against Florida, and whether this format could become an annual event, or even expand into long course racing.
We also ask about Jordan Crooks returning to competition, Molly Hannis racing again at 34 after nearly five years away, and whether any athlete in the field could turn this into an unexpected record hunt.
Records! We do cover the record hunt. DeSorbo and Fenwick both believe records will fall, and they would not be surprised if world records are broken.
