Jonah Koech Banned Three Years For Blood Doping, Stripped Of US 1500m Title | Full Breakdown

USADA announced Monday that Jonah Koech has accepted a three-year ban for blood doping, stripping him of his 2025 US 1500m title and vacating results back to July 30, 2025.

His Athlete Biological Passport returned an Adverse Passport Finding. Samples from July 30, 2025 (the day before the USA Championships prelim) and August 8, 2025 showed values consistent with blood doping. The finding was confirmed by unanimous expert evaluation. The standard penalty is four years; Koech got three for admitting the violation.

The consequences are immediate. Ethan Strand moves up to US 1500m champion. Hobbs Kessler, who finished fourth in 3:31.12 and gave a memorably honest interview afterward about not knowing what more he could have done, would have made the world team.

What's still open: what Koech actually admitted to, who helped him, why USADA didn't test him for three years, and why an athlete with flagged samples from July and August 2025 was cleared to run Worlds that September.
