With the Heat still holding three open roster spots, this suddenly becomes one of the most fascinating storylines in the NBA. Instead of putting all of their eggs in one superstar basket, Miami now has an opportunity to strengthen its depth by potentially adding multiple proven veterans who could immediately contribute to a championship-caliber roster.

DeRozan remains one of the league’s most polished mid-range scorers and one of the best isolation players in basketball. Even at this stage of his career, he proved last season that he can still produce at a high level, averaging around 18 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists while appearing in 77 games. Beal’s season was unfortunately cut short by a hip injury after signing with the Clippers. In limited action, he averaged 8.2 points and 1.7 assists, but prior to the injury he had been a consistent 20+ point scorer throughout his career. Just one season earlier, he averaged 17.0 points, 3.7 assists and 3.3 rebounds, showing he still possesses high-level offensive ability when healthy. Perhaps the most intriguing option is Klay Thompson. Reports indicate Dallas has explored ways to move on from Thompson and could ultimately consider a buyout if no trade materializes. Klay remains one of the greatest shooters in NBA history, and even if he isn’t the All-NBA defender he once was, his floor spacing and championship experience would fit beautifully alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. Miami desperately needs elite perimeter shooting, and Thompson could provide exactly that if he becomes available. Should Miami sign one of these veterans…or should they try to land TWO?
With three open roster spots, that possibility is suddenly very realistic. Imagine adding DeRozan’s shot creation alongside Klay’s shooting. Or pairing Beal’s scoring ability with another veteran addition if he’s able to return healthy. Pat Riley has always been aggressive, and this could be another offseason where the Heat surprise the entire NBA.
