The "Kaitori Daikichi Asian Men's Volleyball Championship Fukuoka 2026" opened on Friday, September 4th at the Kitakyushu Municipal General Gymnasium (Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture).

The Japanese men's volleyball team, ranked 6th in the FIVB world rankings (as of the start of the match), faced Oman, ranked 64th, on Friday, September 4th, and won their first match with a set score of 3-1 (25-18, 25-13, 20-25, 25-9).

In the first set, Japan's first point came with a spike by Yuki Ishikawa. Then, two blocks by Taishi Onodera put Japan ahead 4-3. However, they struggled to get side outs against Oman's blocks, and the set remained close. Ran Takahashi scored two consecutive service aces from short serves to take an 11-10 lead. Ishikawa also disrupted Oman's defense with short serves, and Japan continued to score points by varying the pace of their attacks. Yuji Nishida also made a block, and Japan maintained their lead to the final stages of the set at 19-16. Shoma Tomita came in as a relief server, and a serve led to a block, giving Japan set point. Finally, an Oman error secured the set 25-18, and Japan won the set.

In the second set, Japan started the match at their own pace, and after a good receive by Ran Takahashi, they scored a point to make it 4-1. Takahashi then scored a service ace to make it 6-1, prompting Oman to call a timeout. After two substitutions, Yuta Kawato and Kento Miyaura were brought in, and Takahashi scored a back attack off Kawato's setting. Furthermore, Ishikawa scored two consecutive service aces to give Japan a large lead of 20-12 as the set neared its end. In the end, Onodera scored with a block and a quick attack to win the set 25-13.

In the third set, Oman took the lead, but Ishikawa, whose serve was strong, scored a service ace to tie the score at 14-14. However, Oman's serves disrupted Ishikawa's serve reception, leading to consecutive breaks and putting Oman down 16-18. When Ishikawa was blocked, the score became 18-22, and a timeout was called, but the momentum did not change, and Ishikawa lost the set 20-25.

In the fourth set, Keigo Nishimoto, who was brought into the game for this set, made a block and the score became 5-1. Miyaura then scored to give the team momentum, and they continued to score points. A service ace by Ishikawa and a block by Eva Dedan Larry made it 14-6. Riding on this momentum, Japan continued to score points one after another, and a service ace by Takahashi gave them match point. Finally, Ishikawa scored the winning point, and Japan won the fourth set 25-9.

Yuki Ishikawa said
, "In the first set, there were times when the opponent was leading, but I think we were able to play in our own rhythm from the second half onwards. We lost the third set, but we were able to switch gears afterwards and played good volleyball in the fourth set, so I think that was good. I think we can improve our spikes from here on out, so we want to work on coordinating our combinations well. I think I was able to hit my serves with a very good feeling, so I want to improve my performance even more from here on out. I think the atmosphere is different (for matches where the Olympics are on the line), but that doesn't matter, and we want to do what we need to do. (Looking ahead to the next match) First of all, we just need to win, that's all, so as the coach said, we want to focus only on winning."
