China vs Iran | Semi Finals Highlights | AVC Women's Continental Championship 2026. China delivered another dominant performance at the 2026 AVC Womenโs Volleyball Continental Championship, defeating Iran 3โ0 in the semifinals and securing its place in the championship match. The semifinal was played on August 29, 2026, at the Tianjin Olympic Center Gymnasium in Tianjin, China.
China won the match in straight sets with scores of 25โ22, 25โ12 and 25โ19. Although the final result was convincing, Iran produced a much stronger performance than in the preliminary round, when China had defeated them 3โ0 with set scores of 25โ14, 25โ23 and 25โ14.
The opening set was the closest and most competitive part of the semifinal. Iran stayed within reach of the hosts throughout the set and reduced Chinaโs advantage to 23โ21. However, outside hitter Wu Mengjie delivered two crucial points in the closing stages, allowing China to withstand the pressure and take the first set 25โ22.
Iran also began the second set competitively, but China soon took complete control of the match. Powerful serving, disciplined defense, efficient transition offense and a dominant block helped China build a commanding 19โ10 lead. The hosts extended their advantage to 22โ12 before comfortably closing the set 25โ12.
China made a flying start to the third set and quickly established a 6โ0 advantage. Iran refused to surrender and produced an impressive comeback attempt, gradually reducing the deficit to only two points at 20โ18. China remained calm under pressure, stopped Iranโs momentum and won the decisive points to finish the set 25โ19 and complete the straight-sets victory.
Chinaโs superiority at the net was one of the most important factors in the match. The hosts outblocked Iran 13โ2 and also finished with a 52โ40 advantage in kills. China consistently used its height, speed and organized blocking system to restrict Iranโs attacking options.
Zhuang Yushan was the leading scorer of the semifinal, finishing with 17 points for China. Wu Mengjie added 12 points and played an especially important role during the decisive closing moments of the opening set. Fatemeh Khalili and Ayda Valinezhad led Iran with 11 points each.
China head coach Zhao Yong said that his team had prepared thoroughly for the semifinal and described Chinaโs overall technical performance as solid. He also emphasized that the team had not yet displayed its full potential and needed to remain confident ahead of the final.
China reached the semifinals after finishing first in Pool A without dropping a single set. The hosts then defeated Vietnam 3โ0 in the quarterfinals to continue their perfect run through the tournament. Iran finished second in Pool A before producing a memorable 3โ1 comeback victory over Indonesia in the quarterfinals.
Despite the defeat, Iranโs campaign was historically significant. By overcoming Indonesia, Iran advanced to the semifinals of the Asian Womenโs Championship for the first time in the countryโs history. Iran also competed much more closely with China in the semifinal than it had during their preliminary-round meeting.
The victory sent China into the championship match against Thailand, who stunned Japan with a 3โ1 victory in the other semifinal. Iran moved into the bronze-medal match against Japan.
By reaching the final, China also secured direct qualification for the 2027 Womenโs Volleyball World Cup. The championship match carried even greater importance because the tournament winner would also earn qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
China completed a powerful semifinal performance and moved one victory away from another Asian championship title. Iran may have fallen short of reaching the final, but its historic semifinal appearance and determined performances made this tournament an important milestone for Iranian womenโs volleyball.
