Houston Football 2026 Preview: Is Willie Fritz About to Steal the Big 12?

Houston won 10 games last season, returns Willie Fritz and his entire coordinator group, and brings back one of the most experienced rosters in the Big 12. Conner Weigman gets the same offensive coordinator for consecutive seasons for the first time in his career, while Makhi Hughes joins the backfield with a chance to take some of the burden off a quarterback whose legs have been a major part of the offense. There are questions along both lines, but there’s enough continuity and coaching here to make Houston one of the most interesting contenders in the conference.

The schedule is tricky, with road trips to Texas Tech, Kansas State and Utah, but the timing may actually work in Houston’s favor with K-State and Utah breaking in new head coaches and major roster changes. Could Willie Fritz really pull off a heist and turn Houston into the surprise champion of the Big 12?
