What if Dwyane Wade had waited just ONE more season before retiring?
The 2019-20 Miami Heat gave us one of the most unforgettable playoff runs in franchise history. Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, Goran Dragic, Jae Crowder and a young supporting cast took Miami all the way to the 2020 NBA Finals inside the Orlando bubble.
But there was one major piece missing from that picture… Dwyane Wade.
Wade played his final NBA season in 2018-19, completing his legendary “Last Dance” with the Miami Heat. But recently, Wade discussed the idea of what it might have looked like if he had continued playing — specifically as a veteran coming off the bench for around 15–20 minutes per game.
That got me thinking…
WHAT IF D-WADE HAD WAITED ONE MORE SEASON?
Imagine adding a veteran Dwyane Wade to that 2020 Heat roster.
You already had Jimmy Butler leading the team, Bam Adebayo emerging as one of the league’s young stars, Goran Dragic playing at an incredible level, Jae Crowder providing toughness and shooting, and a deep supporting cast featuring Tyler Herro, Duncan Robinson, Kendrick Nunn, Andre Iguodala, Kelly Olynyk, Solomon Hill and Meyers Leonard.
And then… you add D-WADE to the mix.
Of course, this isn’t about pretending Wade was still the same player he was during his championship years. This is about imagining Wade in a completely different role — a veteran leader who could potentially give Miami 15–20 minutes, provide another ball handler and shot creator, bring championship experience, and help Jimmy Butler navigate the biggest moments of the postseason.
Then things got even more interesting.
Miami ultimately lost Goran Dragic and Bam Adebayo to injuries during the NBA Finals. Despite those devastating setbacks, Jimmy Butler put together one of the greatest performances in Finals history, willing Miami to two victories against the Los Angeles Lakers.
So the question becomes:
If Jimmy Butler had Dwyane Wade coming off the bench alongside him… could that extra veteran presence have changed the outcome?
Could Wade have given Miami enough offense, leadership and playmaking to make the difference?
Could the Heat have pushed the Lakers even further?
And most importantly…
Could Dwyane Wade have helped the Miami Heat win one final championship before officially riding off into the sunset?
That’s the alternate-history scenario we’re exploring in this episode of Miami Heat Talk.
This isn’t saying it would have happened. It’s a “what could have been” discussion — taking that incredible 2020 Miami Heat team and adding one of the greatest players in franchise history to the equation.
The 2020 Heat already came within three wins of a championship.
