The Miami Heat could have an interesting opportunity sitting right in front of them.

Devin Carter has officially been waived by the Atlanta Hawks, making the young guard available on the open market after Atlanta acquired him from the Sacramento Kings earlier this offseason. Carter was waived on September 11, 2026, before he even had the opportunity to report to Atlanta for training camp.

And here’s why this is so interesting for Miami…

The Heat were already connected to Devin Carter during the 2024 NBA Draft.

Carter worked out for Miami before the draft, and reports at the time listed him as one of the potential first-round options the Heat were considering.

Ultimately, Sacramento selected Carter No. 13 overall in the 2024 NBA Draft.

Now he’s potentially available again.

Last season with Sacramento, Carter appeared in 38 games, including 12 starts, while averaging:

Those numbers don’t tell the entire story.

Carter is a young guard who has shown the ability to rebound extremely well for his position, defend, handle the basketball and make plays. His 6’8” wingspan is also a major part of his defensive upside despite standing only 6’2”.

And remember — we’re talking about a player who was a lottery pick just two years ago.

The Hawks acquired him from Sacramento this summer, but now Atlanta has moved on before training camp even begins.

So the question for Pat Riley, Andy Elisburg and the Miami Heat is simple:

There is already a connection between Carter and the Heat from the 2024 draft process.

He’s young.

He’s athletic.

He’s a competitive defender.

He can rebound from the guard position.

This isn’t me saying Devin Carter is suddenly going to become an All-Star.

But when a former lottery pick who Miami already had interest in becomes available, I absolutely believe the Heat should at least make the phone call.
