Georgia Tech's Entire Identity Changes Without Haynes King

Georgia Tech has posted three straight winning seasons under Brent Key, but 2026 represents the biggest test yet of whether the program’s progress can survive without Haynes King. Alberto Mendoza takes over at quarterback in a new offense under George Godsey that should look considerably different, with more ball control, more traditional running and less reliance on the quarterback’s legs. The reviews of Mendoza’s command and preparation have been glowing, but we still need to see what happens when he actually has to make plays against ACC defenses.

The Yellow Jackets are also trying yet another defensive reset, with Jason Semore arriving to install a more aggressive system after years of problems up front. There are reasons to trust Key’s offensive line development and a backfield featuring Justice Haynes, but the schedule includes Colorado, Tennessee, Clemson and Georgia along with several difficult conference games. Georgia Tech has established a solid floor under Key, but can this completely different version of the offense keep the program moving forward?
