The Mariners' new manager might be the best defensive outfielder you've never heard of.
At Buffalo, Jason Kanzler won a Rawlings Gold Glove in 2012. One of nine in all of Division I, and the first in school history. 197 putouts. Zero errors. Then he won another one in 2013, and according to the Mariners, he's the first player in NCAA history to win two.
He was MAC Player of the Year that same season. The Twins still waited until the 20th round.
In Low-A, his hitting coach said, "If you tell him he can't do it, he's going to work 10 times harder to prove you wrong." That same summer he got ejected for arguing a called third strike. Then he grew a mustache out of rebellion because the Twins only allowed mustaches. 🥸
Gold Gloves, a chip on his shoulder and a mustache. That's your new skipper, Seattle.
