In a flurry of MLB offseason moves, the Red Sox acquired veteran starter Sonny Gray from the Cardinals for prospects Brandon Clarke and Richard Fitts plus $20 million in cash, landing a one-year rental of the 36-year-old strikeout machine (elite 5.29 K/BB ratio) despite his unlucky 4.28 ERA; the Cubs signed reliever Phil Maton to a two-year deal (with option) for his unhittable curveball; the Rangers non-tendered outfielder Adolis García, then traded second baseman Marcus Semien (35, $72 million remaining) to the Mets for Brandon Nimmo (33, $105 million left) plus $5 million cash to bolster their outfield depth; the Mets shook up their core by acquiring the durable, glove-first Semien while parting with Nimmo's power; the Braves traded for versatile Gold Glover Mauricio Dubón from the Astros for infielder Nick Allen and re-signed closer Raisel Iglesias for one year, $16 million; and several players hit free agency via non-tenders or releases, including White Sox outfielder Mike Tauchman (.360 OBP since 2023), Royals catcher/outfielder MJ Melendez (high-power, low-contact experiment ended), Braves starter Alek Manoah (28, strong minors rebound), Dodgers reliever Evan Phillips (2.1 ERA since 2022), and arms Mark Leiter Jr., Ian Hamilton, all seeking fresh starts after injury-plagued 2025s.
