China vs Italy | Bronze Match Highlights | Women's VNL 2026. Italy claimed the bronze medal at the 2026 FIVB Women's Volleyball Nations League with a convincing 3-1 victory over host nation China in the third-place match in Macau. After seeing their hopes of a third consecutive VNL title end in the semifinals, the reigning Olympic and World Champions bounced back with an impressive performance to finish the tournament on the podium, while China concluded an outstanding campaign in fourth place in front of their home fans.
Final Score
Italy 3-1 China (25-16, 23-25, 25-22, 25-13)
Italy made a dominant start to the match, taking control of the opening set with aggressive serving, solid blocking, and efficient attacking to cruise to a 25-16 victory. China responded brilliantly in the second set, raising the level of their reception and transition offense. Backed by a passionate home crowd, the hosts edged Italy 25-23 to level the match at one set apiece and bring the contest back to life.
The third set proved to be the turning point. Both teams battled point for point in one of the most competitive stretches of the match, but Italy showed their experience in the closing moments. Better execution under pressure allowed Julio Velasco's side to claim the set 25-22 and move within one set of the bronze medal.
With momentum firmly on their side, Italy completely dominated the fourth set. Their serving continuously disrupted China's reception, while their block shut down the Chinese attack. Italy quickly built a comfortable lead and closed out the match with a commanding 25-13 victory to secure the bronze medal.
Ekaterina Antropova once again led the Italian offense with an outstanding performance, finishing as the match's top scorer. The powerful opposite consistently delivered points in crucial moments with her attacking and serving, playing a decisive role throughout the contest.
Italy's balanced team performance was built on outstanding blocking, relentless serving pressure, disciplined defense, and efficient transition play. Although Paola Egonu had been one of Italy's key players throughout the tournament, Antropova once again demonstrated the incredible depth of the Italian squad by leading the attack in the bronze medal match.
China may have missed out on a medal, but the hosts enjoyed one of their strongest Women's VNL campaigns in recent years. After upsetting the United States in the quarterfinals to reach the semifinals, China remained highly competitive against both Türkiye and Italy, showing significant progress and earning tremendous support from the home crowd throughout the Finals.
Tactically, Italy held the advantage thanks to superior blocking, consistent serving pressure, higher attacking efficiency in transition, fewer unforced errors, and greater composure during the decisive moments of the third set. China impressed with improved defense, quick middle attacks, excellent fighting spirit, and their ability to stay competitive despite Italy's experience.
Both teams entered the bronze medal match following difficult semifinal defeats. Italy lost a dramatic five-set battle against Brazil, ending their pursuit of a third consecutive VNL title, while China fell in straight sets to Türkiye after an impressive run to the semifinals.
The victory earned Italy their first-ever Women's Volleyball Nations League bronze medal, adding another podium finish to a collection that already included three VNL titles. For China, fourth place represented one of their best recent performances in the competition and confirmed the continued development of the national team ahead of future international events.
