USATF Outdoor Championships 2026: Day 1 Reactions – Woody Kincaid Shocks Grant Fisher For 10K Title

The 2026 USATF Outdoor Championships are underway with a loaded opening day featuring a wild 10,000m final, dramatic 1500m prelims, and the sprint stars checking in on schedule.

FINALS
Men's 10,000m — Woody Kincaid, 30:13.66
The race set up perfectly for Kincaid's signature kick. A slow first half (16:12) left the field bunched with a mile to go, and the 33-year-old delivered a jaw-dropping 25.95 final 200m to edge former teammate Grant Fisher by exactly one second. Fisher took silver in 30:14.66, Drew Bosley third in 30:20.60. Kincaid's third national title in six years.

Women's 10,000m — Sydney Vaught, 33:30.60
In her first USATF Outdoor as a professional, the 23-year-old Arkansas alum looked like a seasoned veteran — taking the lead at 5,000m and never relinquishing it, closing in 15:21 to pull away from runner-up Katie Izzo. A statement first national title.

PRELIMS
Men's 100m heats: Christian Coleman leads all qualifiers at 9.96. Noah Lyles (9.97), Kenny Bednarek (10.04), and Courtney Lindsey (10.06) also won their heats and advance.

Women's 100m heats: Sha'Carri Richardson and Star Athletics teammate Kayla White were the only two women under 11 seconds — Richardson won the final heat in 10.90, White took the first in 10.98.

Men's 1500m heats — drama throughout:
Heat 3 (last): Vince Ciattei controlled from the front, winning in 3:41.30. Joe Waskom (3:41.56) and Carter Cutting (3:41.59) grab the last two automatic spots. Eric Holt sneaks in as the final time qualifier at 3:42.20

Heat 2: 0.02 seconds separated the last automatic qualifier from the bubble — Nathan Green (3:42.91) and Gary Martin (3:42.94) go 1-2, Sam Ellis third in 3:43.12. Wes Porter and Abel Teffra both run 3:43.14 and sweat out the time. 2019 champion Craig Engels falls short at 3:43.85

Heat 1: A slow early pace led to last-lap chaos. Luke Houser ran a 52.04 final 400m to win in 3:44.02. NCAA champion Simeon Birnbaum failed to advance, finishing eighth in 3:46.01

Women's 1500m heats:
Heat 1: Addy Wiley wins in 4:04.17, Emily MacKay second in 4:04.29, Heather MacLean (4:04.51) and BYU's Carlee Hansen (4:04.92) round out the automatic qualifiers
Heat 2: Nikki Hiltz cruises through in 4:04.54. Teagan Schein-Becker (4:04.91) and Taryn Parks (4:05.14) both run lifetime bests to advance. Gracie Morris misses in 4:06.70

Men's steeplechase heats: Parker Stokes leads all qualifiers in 8:23.04, Benard Keter right behind at 8:23.65. Top seven all broke 8:30. Defending champion Kenneth Rooks fails to advance — a new U.S. champion is guaranteed. James Corrigan squeezed in as the final time qualifier at 8:32.20.
