Richard Sherman opens up about his special relationship with Kobe Bryant and the impact the NBA legend had on him during one of the most difficult moments of his NFL career.
Sherman recalls first meeting his idol, discovering that Kobe was a fan of his game, and how the two eventually developed a friendship. He also tells an incredible story about Kobe playing in Sherman’s charity softball game, despite never having played organized baseball before, and hitting a home run in his very first at-bat.
But the most powerful moment came after Sherman ruptured his Achilles. Inspired by the way Kobe had handled his own Achilles injury, Sherman refused to leave the field on a cart. When he returned to the locker room and checked his phone, Kobe had already reached out with a simple message: it was time to get back to work.
Sherman explains how that message helped him move past the initial shock of the injury and immediately focus on his recovery.
