Bessie Coleman shattered barriers as the first Black and Native American (Cherokee) woman to earn a pilot’s license. She attended Langston University and later traveled to France in the 1920s to pursue her dream of flight.
Today, Bessie’s legacy lives on through her great-niece, Gigi Coleman, who travels the country sharing Bessie’s story and inspiring the next generation. Through education, mentorship, and hands-on encouragement, Gigi helps students see aviation as a future they belong in.
This #BlackHistoryMonth, we honor Bessie Coleman’s courage, perseverance, and lasting impact.
