Head Coach Natalie Nakase was direct after Golden State's Game 2 loss in Dallas, which evened the series at one game apiece. Nakase said she's never going to be happy after a loss, especially one that didn't reflect the Valkyries' defensive identity, allowing 108 points and 37 free-throw attempts in a game where the team typically holds opponents in the 70s.
Nakase took accountability for unclear communication out of timeouts, saying she needs to get on her players quicker and demand more direction in the huddle. She pointed to a late regulation possession where hesitation on a closeout allowed a costly three, explaining that the scouting report and coverage calls are ultimately her responsibility to make clear. She also acknowledged Dallas' standout performer had an outstanding night offensively, particularly on a signature step-back move the Valkyries knew was coming but failed to take away.
Despite the frustration, Nakase found some positives, noting the offense maintained good spacing and ball movement even against aggressive blitzes, and credited the defense with slowing the opposing star compared to Game 1. She emphasized the team needs to play smarter rather than just harder moving forward, tightening up discipline at the free throw line and improving communication to break opposing coverages.
Nakase said the locker room response was entirely supportive, with players encouraging each other throughout the fourth quarter. The team's plan now is simple: recover on the flight home, review film with clear minds, and be ready to bring their best for Game 3 at home.
