Parker Wolfe just ran the best race of his young career at the Lausanne Diamond League — 12:58.20 for second place in the men's 5000m, behind Bahrain's Birhanu Balew (12:57.55) and ahead of an American 3-4 finish from Nico Young (12:58.33) and Graham Blanks (12:59.16).
Three Americans under 13:00 in a Diamond League 5000m. That doesn't happen very often.
The tactical analysis: Wolfe was boxed on the rail through the final turn. When he finally got out, sliding from the rail all the way to lane three on the home straight, Balew had ten meters. Then Wolfe ran the fastest last 100 meters in the field — 13.1 to Balew's 13.4 — and still couldn't quite close it. Nico Young's 13.3 was nearly as quick. The kick is there. The positioning is still catching up.
