What separates a talented young cricketer from one who eventually represents India? 🏏🇮🇳
In Episode 43 of The Cerebral Cricketer, I sit down with Irfan Sait, founder and director of the Karnataka Institute of Cricket (KIOC), and a coach with more than 30 years of experience developing cricketers.
Irfan has played a role in the development of players including Robin Uthappa, Manish Pandey, Mayank Agarwal and Devdutt Padikkal.
In this conversation, he takes us behind the scenes of what these players were like before they became household names, and what separated them from thousands of other talented young cricketers.
We explore:
- What Irfan first noticed in Uthappa, Pandey, Agarwal and Padikkal
- Why discipline, passion and work ethic matter beyond natural talent
- The importance of mental preparation and problem-solving
- Why technique alone is not enough to reach the highest level
- How coaches can teach players to think for themselves
- The damaging impact parental pressure can have on young cricketers
- How KIOC approaches the development of elite players
- What more than three decades of coaching has taught Irfan about identifying talent
Irfan also reflects on his own journey into coaching, building KIOC, studying coaching in India, Australia and England, and the lessons he has taken from working around some of cricket’s great minds.
This is a fascinating conversation for cricketers, coaches, parents and anyone interested in understanding what actually goes into producing an elite cricketer.
