hanging direction is extra risk, and what makes it survivable is not precision,
it is margin. The shot that won this point cleared the net by a solid two and a
half or three feet and landed several feet inside the line, and that is exactly
why it worked.
Both players had been feeling each other out, and the player in the red shorts
was the first one to blink and change direction. He did it in a savvy way,
taking on a little bit of extra risk but giving himself just enough of an
advantage, and his opponent was clearly not comfortable trying to receive that
ball.
The instinct when you decide to go down the line is to make the shot count by
hitting it an inch over the net and right at the line. That stacks a low
percentage target on top of a shot that was already the riskier choice, so you
end up donating the error you were trying to force.
So the next time you see a reason to change direction, take it, but give the
ball room. Three feet of net clearance and several feet inside the line is still
enough to make your opponent uncomfortable, and it is the version of the shot
that actually wins you the point.
