The semifinal between Japan and Brazil at the 2024 Women's Volleyball Nations League will be remembered as one of the greatest matches in modern women's volleyball. Played on June 22, 2024, in Bangkok, Thailand, this incredible five-set battle saw Japan defeat the undefeated world No. 1 team Brazil by a score of 3-2, earning a historic place in the VNL Final for the very first time.

Brazil entered the semifinal with a perfect 13-0 record, having won every match during the 2024 Volleyball Nations League. They were considered the biggest favorites to win the championship, while Japan relied on their incredible defense, lightning-fast offense, and outstanding teamwork to challenge the tournament's strongest team.

The opening set immediately showed that this would be a classic. Japan narrowly claimed the first set 26-24 after an intense battle. Brazil responded with a strong 25-20 victory in the second set before Japan regained the lead by winning the third set 25-21. Brazil refused to give up and forced a deciding fifth set by taking the fourth 25-22.

The fifth set produced unforgettable drama. Japan stormed to an early 7-1 lead thanks to aggressive serving, excellent blocking, and spectacular defensive plays. Brazil fought back to tie the score at 9-9, but Japan remained calm under pressure. Mayu Ishikawa scored the winning point to complete a historic 15-12 victory and send Japan into its first-ever Women's Volleyball Nations League Final.

Yukiko Wada delivered the performance of her international career, finishing as Japan's top scorer with 21 points. Coming into the match with confidence, she repeatedly broke through Brazil's powerful block with fearless attacks from both the front and back row.

Captain Sarina Koga once again proved why she is one of the world's elite outside hitters. She scored 18 points while leading the team with excellent passing, consistent attacking, and calm leadership during the most important moments of the match.

Mayu Ishikawa added 16 points and produced one of the biggest moments of the tournament by scoring the match-winning attack in the fifth set. She also contributed outstanding defense and several crucial kills throughout the match.

Airi Miyabe played a key role at the net with four impressive blocks, including two massive blocks during Japan's early run in the deciding set that helped create the winning momentum.

For Brazil, captain Gabriela "Gabi" Guimarães was outstanding with 21 points. She carried much of Brazil's offense, attacked efficiently from every position, and kept her team alive until the final rallies. Júlia Bergmann also played an excellent match, adding 17 points with powerful attacks from the outside.

Japan's victory was built on relentless floor defense, fast offensive combinations, intelligent serving, and remarkable composure during the biggest moments of the match.

This historic win ended Brazil's unbeaten 13-match run in the 2024 Volleyball Nations League, sent Japan to its first-ever VNL Final, and guaranteed the country its first Volleyball Nations League medal. Japan eventually finished as the silver medalists after losing to Italy in the championship match, while Brazil missed the podium after falling to Poland in the bronze medal match.
