On Monday, April 6th, Max Andersson — two-time Ötillö World Champion, record holder, and one of the kindest people in swimrun — died tragically in an avalanche in Norway. He was in his mid-thirties.
This episode is our attempt to honor him. We share our memories of Max, talk about what he meant to the sport, and try to put into words what so many in the swimrun community are feeling right now.
Max and his partner Hugo Tormento of Team Ark Swimrun were the most dominant force the sport has ever seen — winning every single ÖTILLÖ World Series race in 2022, including the World Championship, setting a course record of 7 hours and 1 minute that may never be touched. But what people who knew Max will tell you first is not the results. It is how he made everyone around him feel.
We were lucky enough to spend real time with Max at Casco Bay in 2023. Lunch at our favorite spot, a few hours talking about the sport and life while the fog rolled in and the race got postponed. He was generous, warm, funny, and genuinely interested in everyone around him. A fierce competitor and an even better person.
He will be deeply missed.
Our thoughts are with Max's family, his partner Hugo, and the entire swimrun community.
