FC Cincinnati head into the World Cup break with one of their wildest and most explosive performances of the season after a 6-2 demolition of Orlando City at TQL Stadium. In front of another electric home crowd and an incredible AAPI Night atmosphere, FCC once again showed exactly why this team remains one of the most entertaining, frustrating, dangerous, and unpredictable teams in Major League Soccer. The Orange & Blue conceded first yet again, looked shaky defensively for stretches yet again, and still somehow ended the night with SIX goals, a club-record-tying offensive performance, and another reminder that when this attack gets rolling, there may not be a more dangerous team in MLS right now.
We break down everything from Evander’s historic masterclass to another chaotic FCC comeback performance before the league pauses for the World Cup break. Evander delivered arguably the greatest individual performance in FC Cincinnati history with 2 goals and 3 assists, becoming the first player in club history to record both multiple goals and multiple assists in the same match while also setting a new club record with five goal contributions in a single game. Every time he touched the ball in space, the entire stadium came alive. Pat Noonan said after the match that “the scary thing is, there’s more,” and honestly, that feels accurate with the level Evander is playing at right now. We talk about why he has elevated his game recently, how his leadership as captain has changed this team during the last stretch of matches, and whether he has fully entered the MLS MVP conversation after carrying FCC offensively once again.
We also dive into the massive performances around him, including Kenji Mboma Dem scoring the first MLS brace of his career and continuing his breakout stretch with three goals in the last two matches. Kévin Denkey continued his outstanding run of form as well, adding another goal while continuing to create space and problems for opposing defenses all match long. FCC has now scored multiple goals in seven consecutive matches, and the partnership between Denkey and Evander is starting to look like one of the most dangerous attacking duos in the league. Cincinnati now lead MLS in goals scored, and despite all of the defensive inconsistencies, this attack has become capable of overwhelming teams once matches open up.
Of course, because it’s FC Cincinnati, this match still came with plenty of chaos and concerns to discuss. FCC once again conceded first, once again looked vulnerable defensively in transition, and once again allowed Orlando far too much space in dangerous areas. We talk about the continued issues with game management, the defensive rotations with Miles Robinson out, Kyle Smith returning against his former club, Samuel Gidi back in central defense, and why this team still feels so open despite all of the attacking brilliance. Roman Celentano’s late sequence of huge saves may have prevented this game from becoming even more chaotic than it already was.
Beyond the Orlando recap, this episode also turns into a full FC Cincinnati first half of season breakdown as the club enters the World Cup pause. We discuss the biggest storylines from the first half of the year, the players who have exceeded expectations, tactical concerns that still need to improve, roster flexibility moving forward, and whether this team truly looks capable of competing for trophies later this season. Is the attack good enough to carry them through stretches where the defense struggles? Are the defensive issues fixable? Is this simply the identity of the team now? And most importantly, where does FCC actually stand compared to the elite teams around MLS heading into the second half of the year?
We also discuss FCC earning 13 points from losing positions this season, Pat Noonan tying the MLS post-shootout era record as the fastest coach to 75 regular season wins, Evander captaining FCC through this recent stretch of form, another goal from Barlow in back-to-back matches, the incredible atmosphere and tifo at TQL Stadium, our Trivia of the Week featuring the only other MLS players with five goal contribution matches, FCC2 and FC Cincinnati Academy updates, and what type of content you all want to see from us during the World Cup break.
FC Cincinnati now head into the break with momentum, confidence, goals flying in from everywhere, and still a lot left to clean up if they want to truly become an MLS Cup-winning side. The attack looks elite. Evander is playing out of his mind. The matches continue to feel completely out of control at times. And honestly, that combination is what has made this FCC team must-watch soccer over the last month.
