Clarets defeated at Villa Park ahead of international break Donyell Malen’s double sealed a 2-1 win for Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon at Villa Park. The Dutchman bagged a goal in each half to condemn Scott Parker’s side to defeat in the Midlands. Substitute Lesley Ugochukwu pulled a goal back 12 minutes from time, with a fine close-range header, his first goal for Burnley, but an equaliser proved beyond the Clarets, as Villa held on. Scott Parker made one change to the side beaten at Manchester City eight days ago. Axel Tuanzebe came into the team for his first Premier League start since joining the Clarets this summer, with Hjalmar Ekdal making way. Martin Dúbravka started in goal, behind a back five – from right to left – of Kyle Walker, Josh Laurent, Tuanzebe, Maxime Estève and Quilindschy Hartman. Skipper Josh Cullen was joined in the heart of the midfield by Florentino Luis, with in-form wide-man Jaidon Anthony and Loum Tchaouna providing support for Lyle Foster in attack. At a blustery Villa Park, with the aftermath of Storm Amy still affecting parts of the country, including the Midlands, Villa were first to threaten, with Digne’s ninth minute corner flashing across the face of goal when a touch on any sorts would’ve surely resulted in the opening goal of the game. Moments later, at the other end, Hartman was denied by a fine save from Martinez, before Anthony’s follow-up was hacked to safety. A late flag from the assistant referee on the near side adjudged Hartman to have been narrowly offside from the first chance. As the game sprung into life, Morgan Rodgers saw an effort deflected narrowly wide from 12-yards out, and then from the resultant corner, Dúbravka produced a fine save to tip Esri Konsa’s header around the post. Burnley were well in the game, though, with Hartman’s inviting cross just evading an on-rushing team-mate, with Walker’s subsequent cross coming to nothing. The Clarets were playing some neat, front-foot football, with Foster and Anthony a constant threat in attack. However, despite enjoying long spells of possession, the Clarets found themselves trailing in the 25th minute. Boubacar Kamara’s sublime through ball was perfectly weighted for Malen, who – with time and space – took two touches before finishing with aplomb past Dúbravka from a tight angle. The Clarets thought they’d equalised ten minutes later, only for Martinez to pull off a stunning full-length save to deny Cullen from the edge of the box, tipping the midfielder’s half-volley inches wide of the post. That proved to be the last noteworthy chance of the half, with the hosts heading into the break with a narrow 1-0 lead. It was the hosts who created the first chance of note, on 54 minutes, when a devastating counter resulted in the ball ending up at the feet of Rodgers 12-yards from goal – but Dúbravka was quick off his line to deny the England attacker. Parker made a double change five minutes later; Jacob Bruun Larsen and Armando Broja entering the fray at the expense of Tchaouna and Anthony. The changes failed to have the desired impact, however, with Villa doubling their lead on 63 minutes – Rodgers’ pass finding Malen, who fired an unstoppable right-footed strike into the back of the net. Villa were in full-now, with Matty Cash bringing the best out of Dúbravka with a stinging strike from distance. But the Clarets got themselves a lifeline 12 minutes from time, with a goal from substitute Ugochukwu. Gifted the freedom of the six-yard box, the midfielder rose unmarked to power home a header from Hartman’s corner, to give Parker’s side hope. With the clock ticking towards the final minute of normal time, Dúbravka produced a stunning stope to deny Digne, before the fourth official showed five minutes of added time. The Clarets, despite their best endeavours, were unable to find an equaliser though, as Villa secured all three points.
