He made history at the 2012 Olympic Games in London: in the final, he led from the start and set the world record that still stands today with a time of 1:40.91 minutes – becoming the first athlete to break the 1:41 barrier and simultaneously world record holder, world champion, and Olympic champion. He had already broken the record set by his compatriot Wilson Kipketer and collected international titles.
