Looking for youth soccer drills for your next practice? Run Gates Passing, Diamond Passing, Grid Dribbling, Slalom Dribbling and Freeze Tag with former FC Cincinnati midfielder Corben Bone.
In this FC Cincinnati Soccer Drills compilation, presented by Penn Station East Coast Subs, Corben, FC Cincinnati's Director of Soccer in the Community, breaks down five easy-to-run drills at TQL Stadium. Two passing drills build movement, communication and first touch. Two dribbling drills build close control and confidence on the ball. Freeze Tag finishes things off as a fun dribbling and passing game. Each drill uses simple equipment, works for players of all levels and fits into any youth soccer practice, warm-up or game day routine.
⚽ EQUIPMENT
- Gates Passing: 4 large cones, 16 small cones, 1 ball per pair
- Diamond Passing: 3 flat cones, 1 mini goal, soccer balls
- Grid Dribbling: 4 cones (20x20 grid), 1 ball per player
- Slalom Dribbling: 9 small cones, 1 mini goal, soccer balls
- Freeze Tag: 4 cones (20x20 grid), 1 ball per player, scrimmage vests or cones to mark the taggers
📋 HOW TO PLAY
1. Gates Passing: Partners move around the grid and pass through small cone gates, receive the ball and find a new gate.
2. Diamond Passing: Make angled passes around a diamond of cones, then finish with a long pass into a mini goal. Add a give-and-go for a progression.
3. Grid Dribbling: Dribble inside a 20x20 grid and react to the whistle with a sole stop, toe touches, a skill move or a ball swap.
4. Slalom Dribbling: Two teams race through a slalom and shoot on a mini goal. Play three rounds: right foot only, left foot only, then both feet.
5. Freeze Tag: Dribblers avoid the taggers. Tagged players freeze, and teammates set them free by passing into the ball between their feet.
🎯 COACHING POINTS
- Gates Passing: Keep a good pace, keep your head up and weight the pass so your partner can control it.
- Diamond Passing: Set yourself up with your first touch and pass with the right pace so the next player has space.
- Grid Dribbling: Keep close control, find open space and react fast to the whistle.
- Slalom Dribbling: Use small touches, stay balanced around each cone and build skills on both feet.
- Freeze Tag: Dribble with your head up under pressure and use accurate passes to unfreeze teammates.
