USA's Bobby Finke might have gone into the 1500m final at Paris 2024 as reigning Olympic Champion, but the odds seemed to be against him. He'd already lost his 800m Olympic title to rising star Daniel Wiffen of Ireland and faced an enormous challenge in the Irish swimmer as well as Italian veteran Gregorio Paltrinieri.
Still, Finke persevered and led the race from beginning to end culminating with a new world record in the event after 12 years. Finke's victory also protected Team USA's incredible 120-year long streak of having at least one male Olympic Champion in swimming.
