Pitt Football 2026 Preview: Can Mason Heintschel Break the Panthers Out of the ACC Middle?

Pitt was one of the harder teams for us to pin down because the range of outcomes feels enormous. Mason Heintschel was a revelation last season and now gets another year in Kade Bell’s fast, pass-heavy offense, but the next step is becoming more consistent and less dependent on boom-or-bust plays. If Heintschel can settle into the boring stuff, stay on schedule and get more help from the running game and receivers like Censere Lee, Pitt’s offense has a chance to become both more explosive and more efficient.

The defense gives the Panthers a pretty reliable starting point, with Braylan Lovelace leading a group that should defend the run well and may be better in the secondary than people expect. The schedule also creates an interesting setup, with a manageable first half followed by a much tougher closing stretch featuring Miami, Georgia Tech, Florida State, Louisville and a road trip to Cal. Pitt could look like a contender early and still end up right back in its familiar place in the ACC middle. .
