Cincinnati Opens 2026 Season Against Boston College at Nippert Stadium

The Cincinnati Bearcats will begin their 2026 season Saturday afternoon when they host the Boston College Eagles at Nippert Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET, with the game televised nationally on FOX.

Cincinnati enters its fourth season under head coach Scott Satterfield after finishing 7-6 and reaching the Liberty Bowl in 2025. The Bearcats opened last season with seven wins in their first eight games before losing their final five contests, including a 35-13 bowl loss to Navy.

Despite the disappointing finish, Cincinnati continued its steady improvement under Satterfield. The Bearcats went 3-9 during their first Big 12 season in 2023, improved to 5-7 in 2024 and reached seven victories last year. The next challenge is proving that the program can sustain its success throughout an entire season.

The Bearcats will have a significantly different roster in 2026. Cincinnati added 51 newcomers, including 26 transfers, as Satterfield and his staff rebuilt several important position groups.

Georgia Southern transfer JC French IV will start at quarterback. French made 26 starts and accounted for 45 total touchdowns over his final two seasons at Georgia Southern. His experience, mobility and ability to create plays outside the pocket should give Cincinnati a different dimension offensively.

French will operate behind what should be the strength of the team. Cincinnati returns three key starters from an offensive line that allowed only eight sacks last season, the fewest among Power Four programs.

Preseason All-American left guard Evan Tengesdahl leads the group after earning First-Team All-Big 12 honors in 2025. Left tackle Joe Cotton and center Taran Tyo also return, giving the Bearcats an experienced foundation up front.

Cincinnati must replace its top three running backs and five leading receivers from last season. Notre Dame transfer and Cincinnati native Gi’Bran Payne is expected to have an important role in the backfield. Cole Tabb, who transferred from Stanford, and Zion Johnson will also be involved.

The receiving corps features several new faces, including Georgia Southern transfer JV Gibson and FCS standout Jeff Caldwell. Developing chemistry between French and his new targets will be one of the biggest early-season storylines.

Defensively, the Bearcats are beginning a new era under coordinator Nate Woody. Cincinnati is moving back to an aggressive 3-4 scheme after struggling to generate pressure and create takeaways last season.

Woody spent the previous six seasons at Army and produced several highly rated defenses. His system emphasizes movement, pressure and forcing offenses into mistakes.

Jonathan Thompson and Antwan Peek Jr. are the most accomplished returning defenders. Thompson led Cincinnati with 74 tackles and 8.5 tackles for loss last season. Peek has forced six fumbles during his career and will play a versatile role that allows him to contribute in coverage and attack the quarterback.

The Bearcats also added several potential impact defenders through the portal. Edge rusher Thomas Johnson recorded 12 sacks at North Carolina Central, while safety MJ Cannon earned All-MAC honors at Bowling Green.

Boston College arrives in Cincinnati looking to rebound from a 2-10 season. The Eagles are entering their third year under head coach Bill O’Brien and underwent their own significant roster reconstruction during the offseason.

Mason McKenzie, a transfer from Division II Saginaw Valley State, will start at quarterback. McKenzie was named the GLIAC Player of the Year in 2025 and produced nearly 6,000 total yards during his career. His ability as both a passer and runner could provide an immediate test for Cincinnati’s new defensive system.

The Eagles also rebuilt their backfield and offensive line. Liberty transfer Evan Dickens and Maryland transfer Nolan Ray give Boston College two experienced options at running back, but an offensive line replacing several starters must prove it can protect McKenzie.

That battle in the trenches could determine the game. Cincinnati’s veteran offensive line should have an advantage against a Boston College defense that struggled to create pressure last season.

Saturday will be the ninth meeting between the programs, with the all-time series tied 4-4. Cincinnati dominated the most recent matchup, defeating Boston College 38-6 in the 2019 Birmingham Bowl.

The Bearcats have won 24 consecutive home openers and 18 of their last 21 season-opening games. Protecting Nippert Stadium and extending those streaks would give Cincinnati an important first step as it attempts to build another bowl team and establish momentum before Big 12 play begins.
