Before the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup, there was speculation that it could be the most open tournament ever. Australia were no longer the dominant force which saw them win six of the seven T20 World Cups played from 2010 to 2023.

In Sophie Molineux, they had a new captain who came in with questions about whether she would make Australia’s best XI if she wasn’t captain. And yet, it was Australia who emerged victorious once again, unbeaten throughout the competition and hammering England in the final.

With the ‘gap’ between Australia and the rest of the world looking as sizable as ever, Katya Witney wonders whether the manner of their T20 World Cup triumph could indicate that they’re gearing up for another era of domination.
