Exploring shallow water is a vital stage in the learn to swim process. Here baby can learn the difference between deep and shallow water. They can learn to float and climb up on a shallow ledge or step, push and float off a step and turn and come back to the side of the pool. Babies love to crawl, play and explore different depths of water. But remember even very shallow water is dangerous for children under 5. Parents must always be providing active supervision and be ready to respond.
Pool depth is very important for both parent and baby. Chest level on an adult is perfect. Here the parent is able to hold the child comfortably and look them directly in the eye. Eye contact gives the baby a feeling of real security. If the water is too shallow it is difficult to maintain eye contact with the baby. If the water is too deep it can become dangerous.
Parents must be able to stand and should never be trending water when teaching baby to swim. Parents can become easily fatigued when treading water and this could put your baby in danger.
• Chest level is ideal for eye contact
• Shallow water exploration is vital in learn to swim
• Always provide active adult supervision
• Give baby an opportunity to practice independent floating to and from a shallow water ledge or step
• Encourage baby to independently recover and pull up on your T-Shirt
All baby swimming classes must be conducted in a safe and positive learn to swim environment. Each Baby and Toddler should be encouraged to learn to swim according to their individual readiness. The learn to swim process should follow a step by step process including water familiarisation, breath control, submersion, floating and propulsion. Adult supervision is always required when in and around the water. To learn all about how to teach swimming to babies visit my website and get my online porgram at babyswim.info
