Milwaukee demolished Cincinnati 20-0 in Friday’s series opener, handing the Reds the largest shutout loss in franchise history. The defeat dropped Cincinnati to 69-78 while Milwaukee improved to 92-56 and extended its winning streak to four games. The Brewers have been particularly dominant at home this season, making Saturday another difficult challenge for Terry Francona’s club.

Right-hander Brady Singer gets the ball for Cincinnati. Singer enters at 6-13 with a 5.03 ERA and 120 strikeouts. His most recent outing also came against Milwaukee, when he earned the victory despite allowing six runs over five innings in Cincinnati’s 12-8 win. Singer surrendered only four hits in that game but issued a career-high six walks, something he’ll need to clean up against a Brewers lineup capable of putting constant pressure on opposing pitchers. Singer owns a 4.70 ERA across six career starts against Milwaukee.

Milwaukee is expected to counter with left-hander Kyle Harrison, although MLB still listed the Brewers’ starter as TBD earlier Saturday. Harrison is 10-4 with a 3.66 ERA, but his recent performances have been a major concern. He has lasted only 3⅔ innings in each of his last two starts while allowing 15 total runs, 13 earned, on 19 hits. Cincinnati has also given Harrison trouble throughout his career, as he owns a 6.27 ERA in four appearances against the Reds.

The biggest question is whether Cincinnati’s offense can wake up. The Reds have scored only three runs over their last three games, including Friday’s shutout, after producing 12 runs against Milwaukee just six days ago. Sal Stewart and Elly De La Cruz remain the centerpieces of a Cincinnati lineup that has shown plenty of power this season but has struggled to consistently generate offense.

For the Reds, Saturday is about pride as much as anything else. After being embarrassed in the opener, Cincinnati has an immediate opportunity to respond against its division rival. A sharper Singer, better command and an early offensive breakthrough could give the Reds exactly the bounce-back performance they desperately need.
