Germany’s Lukas Märtens snagged the first swimming gold medal at Paris 2024, holding off a hard-charging Elijah Winnington of Australia in the men’s 400m freestyle final. Märtens swam well ahead of world-record pace throughout much of the race, but slowed in the final 50 metres. He ultimately finished more than a second off Paul Biedermann’s scorching world record of 3:40.07, but still did more than enough to claim the gold medal with a time of 3:41.78. The Republic of Korea's Kim Woomin completed the podium.
