Monterey Bay FC entered Saturday night still searching for their first win of the 2026 season — eight games in, zero league wins, and a fanbase running low on patience. What they got instead was a USL Cup thriller against Oakland Roots at Cardinale Stadium in front of 3,600 fans in Seaside, California.
MBFC equalized late to force a penalty shootout, then 19-year-old goalkeeper Fernando Delgado stepped up and saved two penalties to hand the 831 their first win of 2026. It doesn't move the needle in the regular season standings, but for a club mid-rebuild under a new head coach, that moment matters. Feyenoord loanee Nadje also got his first start — a sign that the new pieces are starting to get their shot.
Is this the turning point for Monterey Bay FC? We break it down on Bay-to-Bay Futbol — NorCal's weekly soccer podcast covering every level of the game from MLS to your local pitch.
