Coach Natalie Nakase walks into the WNBA Finals prep presser on October 12 the same way she has approached every moment of this season: focused on the details, locked into the game plan, and completely honest about who she is and how she coaches. The identity of this team came from her directly. She coaches the way she played. Defense, organization, directing, encouraging, and making people’s lives easier on the floor. You cannot fake who you are. She has never tried to. From the first interview to the WNBA Finals in year two, the vision has always been the same. What made it real was execution. When asked how it all came together, she pointed to one piece of advice from Joe Lacob that has guided everything: hire good people. Simple standard. Powerful result. The Warriors won championships with joy, and Coach Natalie built this franchise on that same foundation. The composure this team shows in close games was not always there. Early losses revealed what they were not good at yet.
Those losses became the curriculum. Building out situational plays, developing the closing muscle, figuring out what Gabby, Veronica, and Tiffany need at the end of games. The growth over one full season has been remarkable. The players are hungry going into the Finals. After one film session today they came back and asked if that was it. Coach Natalie smiled. They have time. But that appetite for preparation is exactly why this team is dangerous. Ballhalla is the sixth player. Coach Natalie lost her voice. Her staff lost their voices. The reason they want to win a championship is for those fans. Her sister laid food out around the kitchen before she left. Coach Natalie forgot to eat during a one hour film session. She is monitoring herself. The WNBA Finals will have to wait until after the meal.
