The Reds will send right-hander Brady Singer to the mound looking to stop a recent stretch of inconsistency. Singer’s season has been frustrating so far, as he enters the outing with an ERA north of six and has struggled badly with the long ball. Opposing hitters have punished mistakes left over the plate, particularly against his sinker when it flattens out in hitter’s counts. Cincinnati needs Singer to work deeper into the game tonight after the bullpen has been heavily used over the past week.
Despite some offensive ups and downs, the Reds lineup still has plenty of dangerous bats. JJ Bleday has quietly become one of Cincinnati’s more productive hitters recently, providing quality at-bats and extra-base power from the left side. Spencer Steer and Tyler Stephenson continue to anchor the middle of the order, while the Reds are hoping their younger players can provide more consistency as the season moves deeper into June.
St. Louis counters with right-hander Kyle Leahy, who has been one of the more surprising contributors in the Cardinals rotation this season. Leahy doesn’t overpower hitters, but he has done a strong job limiting hard contact and forcing opponents to put the ball in play early in counts. The Reds saw him earlier this season and managed to hit a pair of home runs against him, so Cincinnati’s familiarity could play a factor tonight.
The Cardinals are in the middle of a youth movement and have leaned heavily on players like Masyn Winn, Jordan Walker, Alec Burleson, and rookie infielder JJ Wetherholt to carry the offense. Walker, in particular, has started showing the power potential St. Louis envisioned when he became one of baseball’s top prospects. Winn continues to create problems with his speed and athleticism at the top of the lineup, giving the Cardinals a much more aggressive offensive identity than in recent years.
With Singer’s home run struggles and two offenses capable of producing crooked numbers quickly, tonight’s game has the potential to turn into a high-scoring divisional battle. Early June games rarely feel must-win, but with the NL Central standings packed tightly together, both clubs understand the importance of gaining momentum heading into the middle portion of the season.
