The Miami Heat finally landed Giannis Antetokounmpo, but could the blockbuster trade create an unexpected casualty?
In today’s episode of Miami Heat Talk, we break down Brian Windhorst’s recent comments suggesting that Norman Powell’s future with the Miami Heat may be in serious doubt following the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade.
After acquiring Giannis and Bobby Portis, Miami used its trade exception and now finds itself hard-capped at the first apron, significantly limiting the team’s flexibility to make additional roster moves. While the Heat would love to keep Powell after his All-Star caliber season, the financial realities of the new CBA could make retaining him much more complicated than many fans realize.
We discuss whether Miami can convince Powell to take a discount in order to continue competing for a championship alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. We also examine Powell’s perspective as a 33-year-old veteran who may be looking to secure the largest contract of his career while he still has the opportunity.
Additionally, we dive into Jake Fischer’s report that the Detroit Pistons have interest in Norman Powell and explore potential sign-and-trade scenarios that could benefit both sides. Could Duncan Robinson return to Miami? Could Powell agree to a short-term contract and revisit free agency next summer when more teams have cap space available?
With Giannis now in Miami, every roster decision becomes even more important as the Heat attempt to build a championship contender around one of the greatest players in the NBA.
Do you think Norman Powell will remain with the Miami Heat? Should Miami prioritize re-signing him, or explore sign-and-trade options if the price becomes too expensive?
