“I remember when I was a kid coming out and watching the elite athletes and now to be on the other side of that, it feels incredible.” - Michelle Jenneke
At the Perth Track Classic, the Rio Tinto Athletics for the Outback program gave young athletes the opportunity to develop their skills, build confidence and experience the sport alongside elite Australian athletes.
Designed to bring high-quality coaching and athletics experiences to children in regional and remote communities, the program uses the fundamentals of running, jumping and throwing to help build skills that can support participation across sport.
For Michelle Jenneke, the experience brings things full circle. Once the young athlete watching from the sidelines, she now gets to meet and inspire the next generation coming through.
Created by Australian Athletics in partnership with Rio Tinto, Under the Surface explores the people, experiences and relationships behind Australian athletics.
