The Cincinnati Reds begin a crucial three-game road series Monday night against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park, with both teams desperately looking to reverse recent struggles.
Cincinnati arrives in San Diego after one of its most frustrating weekends of the season. The Reds were swept by the St. Louis Cardinals despite holding leads in all three games, including late advantages in the first two contests. The club has now lost four consecutive games and has watched its promising start to the season slip away as bullpen issues and inconsistent offense have plagued the team over the past two weeks.
The Padres aren't entering the series in much better shape. San Diego has lost 11 of its last 13 games and has fallen out of the National League West race after spending much of the season near the top of the standings. A team built around star power and pitching depth has struggled to score runs consistently during its recent skid.
For both clubs, this series feels bigger than a typical June matchup. The Reds sit below .500 and are trying to avoid falling further behind in the National League Central race. The Padres are dealing with growing frustration after seeing a strong start largely erased by one of the worst stretches in baseball.
Monday's pitching matchup features two starters coming off encouraging outings.
The Reds will hand the ball to left-hander Andrew Abbott, who has quietly become one of the more reliable arms in Cincinnati's rotation. Abbott enters the game with a 4-3 record and a 4.06 ERA. He is coming off a six-inning performance against Kansas City and has historically pitched extremely well against San Diego. In four career starts versus the Padres, Abbott owns a remarkable 0.98 ERA and has consistently kept one of baseball's more talented lineups in check.
The Padres will counter with veteran right-hander Walker Buehler. After difficult seasons following his return from Tommy John surgery, Buehler appears to be rediscovering his form in 2026. While his 4.53 ERA doesn't fully reflect his recent success, he is coming off one of his strongest outings of the year and has shown improved command and effectiveness over the past month.
The Reds offense will need a bounce-back performance after a disappointing series in St. Louis. Cincinnati scored enough runs to win several games over the weekend but struggled to deliver the big hit when it mattered most. Players like Matt McLain, Spencer Steer, Sal Stewart and TJ Friedl will be counted on heavily as the team continues to play without several key contributors.
One bright spot for Cincinnati has been rookie Sal Stewart. The young infielder continues to impress with his mature approach at the plate and has become one of the Reds' most consistent offensive threats. Matt McLain also showed signs of breaking out during the Cardinals series and will look to carry that momentum into San Diego.
For the Padres, the lineup is still centered around Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado and Jackson Merrill. However, San Diego's offense has struggled to string together quality at-bats during its recent losing streak. The Padres have frequently left runners on base and have failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
The series could also provide an opportunity for the Reds' starting rotation to set the tone. Cincinnati has received strong performances from its starters for much of the season, and Abbott's track record against San Diego gives the Reds reason for optimism in the opener.
Beyond Monday's game, the pitching matchups later in the series are equally intriguing. Chase Burns is expected to pitch for Cincinnati on Tuesday, giving the Reds one of their best opportunities to secure a victory. Burns has been one of baseball's most impressive young pitchers this season and continues to establish himself as a cornerstone of the Reds' future.
Ultimately, this series features two talented teams searching for answers. The Padres are trying to stop a free fall in the National League West, while the Reds are looking to regain the momentum that helped them surge into first place earlier this season.
For Cincinnati, the formula is simple: get quality starts, protect late leads, and find timely offense. If the Reds can do those things against a struggling Padres club.
