What were the best clubs on the PGA Tour this week?
The Strokes Gained Gear Report is back, this time from the Scottish Open — and the numbers tell a clear story about what real equipment fitting looks like at the highest level.
Off the tee, Rory McIlroy gained over 1.5 shots on the field with his TaylorMade Qi10 and Ventus Black original shaft. The interesting part isn't ball speed — it's that this build is engineered around control. Rory already has more speed than he needs; the fit is about giving him something he can trust at full commitment.
Into the greens, Bob MacIntyre picked up 2.3 shots gaming a full set of Titleist 620 CB blades — one of the few players left sticking with an all-blade setup. In links conditions especially, managing launch, spin, and descent angle into firm, wind-affected greens is everything, and that's exactly where a precise fit separates good ball-strikers from great ones.
Around the green, Michael Thorbjornsen gained 1.4 shots with a TaylorMade MG4 wedge setup: a 52 SB09, 56 SB12, and 60 TW11. Three different grinds means three different turf interactions covered, so whatever the lie, he's got the strike stability and launch variety to hit the right shot.
And on the greens, Tyrrell Hatton was the standout, gaining over 2.2 shots with a Ping PLD Oslo prototype putter — a shape he's used before, but with a new flow neck this week. We'll see if it sticks in the bag long term.
The lesson from every category this week: don't copy their bag. Copy their fits.
