Get your players moving, communicating and excited for practice with Gates Passing, a simple youth soccer passing warm-up explained by former FC Cincinnati midfielder Corben Bone.
In this FC Cincinnati Soccer Drills episode, presented by Penn Station East Coast Subs, Corben, FC Cincinnati's Director of Soccer in the Community, shows how to set up and coach Gates Passing at TQL Stadium. Partners move around the grid and pass the ball through small cone gates, receive it on the other side and keep moving. It's a great warm-up before practice or on game day for players of any level.
⚽ EQUIPMENT
• 4 large cones (to mark the grid)
• 16 small cones (to make the passing gates)
• Soccer balls (1 per pair)
• A partner
📋 HOW TO PLAY
1. Use the small cones to set up passing gates inside the grid.
2. Players pair up with one ball per pair.
3. Move around the grid and pass to your partner through a gate.
4. Receive the ball, find a new gate and keep going.
🎯 COACHING POINTS
• Movement: Keep players moving at a good pace, not jogging or walking.
• Awareness: Heads up. Know where the other players are and find open space.
• Pace of the pass: Weight the pass so your partner can receive and control it.
