With two outs and the Reds leading 5-4, JJ Wetherholt lifted a fly ball into left-center field with runners on second and third. Friedl and Myers both converged on the ball, with Myers coming over from center field and calling Friedl off. Friedl yielded, but Myers was unable to make the catch as the ball hit his glove and fell to the ground.

Both Cardinals runners scored on the play, turning a potential game-ending catch into a 6-5 St. Louis lead. Myers was charged with the error.

The mistake opened the door for a six-run Cardinals ninth inning. What could have been the final out of a 5-4 Reds victory instead became the turning point of the game, with St. Louis eventually winning 10-9.

The play raised questions about the communication between Friedl and Myers, which outfielder had the better path to the baseball, and how a seemingly routine fly ball turned into one of the most consequential defensive mistakes of the Reds' season.
