Val Ackerman | 2026 Women of Inspiration presented by Post University

Val Ackerman is a true pioneer in women’s sports and a visionary leader who helped change the landscape of basketball forever.

As the founding President of the WNBA, Val led the league through its historic launch in 1996, helping establish a professional platform where women could compete, lead, and inspire on the biggest stage.

Her impact extends far beyond the WNBA. She went on to become the first woman to serve as President of USA Basketball from 2005-2008, and has led the BIG EAST Conference since 2013.

And here in Connecticut, Val holds a special place in the history of the Connecticut Sun—officially unveiling the team as the WNBA’s newest franchise in 2003.

A trailblazer, mentor, and champion for women in sports, Val Ackerman has spent her career opening doors and creating opportunities for the generations that follow.
