The Golden State Valkyries Just Swept the Defending Champions and Are Going to the WNBA Finals

The Golden State Valkyries sweep the defending champion Las Vegas Aces in overtime and are going to the WNBA Finals. Two years into existence. Nobody believed in them all season. Now they are four wins away from a championship. Gabby Williams said it with a smile: get ready for the bandwagoners. Nobody gave this team love all season. Nobody talked about them. But every single day they went to work, believed in each other, and built something worth fighting for. Same mentality going into the finals. Stay together. Stay unselfish. Whoever is hot gets the ball.

Down 11 in the third quarter on the road against the defending champions the Valkyries told themselves what they always tell themselves. This is not impossible. They have come back from deficits all season. Gabby sat out most of the third while the team went on its run and flipped the game. She stayed loud on the bench, stayed engaged, came back in overtime ready, and swiped the ball from A'ja Wilson with two minutes left. She tried to beat her with speed. It worked. The Gabby and Tip tandem was the defining story of this series. If Gabby does not have it she knows Tip has it. When Tip does not have it Tip knows Gabby has it. That trust and that ability to take turns carrying the load is what separates this team. Having Tiffany Hayes coming off the bench in the WNBA Finals is an unfair advantage. Gabby knows it.

Kiah Stokes is a three time champion and when Gabby found out she was signing with the Valkyries she felt a wave of relief she could not describe. Gabby got emotional talking about what Kiah means to this team. She is just a winner. There is a reason she has three rings. The depth advantage was decisive. Vegas leaned on their top three players. The Valkyries kept rotating, stayed fresh, and down the stretch it showed. Going into the finals it is a clean slate. Zero and zero. And the Valkyries are built for exactly this.
